This week you are delivering a piece that outlines the history and development of the discourse community you are investigating. There are many ways to investigate the history of a community (perhaps there are sections in its website that outline its origins), but there are also archival sources at libraries that trace histories of communities too. Often times, members will have an understanding of the history and development of a community, so talking with them is a great option.
Whether you delve into the history of the community through an email interview or other means, it is important that you outline the history and origins of the community and how it came into existence. You might also delve into important historical moments when you write about the history of the community. Think of this blog posting as being an important part of your final ethnography paper.
There is no word count for this piece, and since we are quite busy putting this project together, this posting is not due until Thursday, April 11th before 11:59pm.
If you should have any questions, please send me an email or come to office hours.

ReplyDeleteIncreasing interaction leads to foundation
ReplyDeleteThe UCF Athletic Trainers’ community’s foundation plays along with the foundation of the College itself and also with the establishment of intercollegiate athletic teams. As several sports teams were created, more and more athletic trainers were required. Considering this, there is no exact date which the foundation of this community can be determined by. More, the foundation can be seen as a smooth establishment through the increasing interrelation and interaction between the different Athletic Trainers.
The UCF varsity athletic program began during the 1969–1970 academic year and the profession itself was first widely recognized in 1950. Therefore, to set limits to the foundation’s date, one could say that it can be dated back to sometime during this period of time at the earliest.
The intention behind the existence of this community is in first place the necessity to take care of the athletes’ health. Moreover, it gives all athletes the opportunity for first hand assistance concerning any kind of anatomical or physiological questions and issues. Since there is actually a group of people which has studied and has huge interest in one’s well-being, it is more likely for every athlete to open up about individual issues and the demand for help.
Unfortunately there is no evidence about the climate in which the community was established, since the trainers, who belonged to the ‘founding generation’ are very hard to find and to get in contact with. However, closely watching the members’ association with one another leaves me with only one assumption. The climate during the year of establishment must have been very interactive, friendly and definitely with the goal of providing best possible conditions for young athletes. Just the way they handle and behave towards each other today.
Through increasing advance in knowledge and technology, the possibilities for good treatment and assistance have definitely shifted over the years. Not only are nowadays special certificates and degrees an ultimate requirement for the entrance into the community but also are new members tested over and over again in several ranges, being it their knowledge or their handling of the patients, before they can even think about entering the community.
This, stated by one of the ‘older’ community members, wasn't really the case 40 years ago.

The Sarasota YMCA sharks formed in 1961 in Sarasota, FL and swimm at the YMCA in potter park. They have been the host to many different swimming events within the community and also internationally. The sharks won 18 straight YMCA swimming titles from 1985-2002, and are currently on 9 year win streak with their junior national team. The Sarasota YMCA is set to host the 2013 Pan American masters meet along with many other high school and junior national events. The sharks are led by coach Steve Brown, who has been with the team since August 1994. He has been awarded many titles for his outstanding coaching with all age groups and has had success every year in making sure his team is competing at the highest level possible. The sharks have been one of the most successful team in Florida swimming history and they continue to produce high quality swimmers at an early age and develop them into great high school and college athletes.

Disney’s Polynesian Resort was one of the first resorts built at Disney World, opening on October 1, 1971. This resort invites guests to escape to a tropical paradise of the South Pacific. The cast members are thought of as ambassadors of Polynesian tradition and heritage and are Mea Ho’okipa, which translates to them welcoming and entertaining guests with unconditional warmth and generosity. They also represent the spirit of Kina’ole, which means flawlessness and excellence in the highest degree. As you can probably already tell, the Polynesian Resort embodies the Hawaiian language and makes it a staple of their theming. Their motto is Aiita Peatea which means “There will be another day tomorrow, just like today.”
Kona Café is one of the two full service restaurants this resort has to offer. This restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner infusing Asian zest with traditional American fare. Guests can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere the restaurant has to offer while dining on delicacies such as Tonga Toast, Pan-Asian noodles, or fresh sustainable fish. It’s no wonder that it’s a popular destination for all Disney guests.
Kona Cafe is named after the Kona district, or “moku” on the Big Island of Hawai’i. The moku of Kona is divided into North Kona District (Kona ‘Akau) and South Kona District (Kona Hema). In the Hawaiian language, kona means leeward or dry side of the island, but sometimes the term “Kona” is used to refer to its largest town Kailua-Kona. However, Kona also includes many other towns such as Kealakekua, Keauhou, Holualoa, Honaunau, and Honalo. In the Kona district, the volcanic slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa provide an ideal microclimate for growing coffee. Kona coffee is thought to be one of the premium specialty coffees of the world. Of course, Kona café would offer authentic Kona coffee prepared in a French Press.
Some fun facts about the Polynesian Resort were also discovered during my time here. This Deluxe Resort is actually where John Lennon signed the paperwork that officially broke up the Beatles on December 29, 1974. Lennon and his family left New York with plans to spend Christmas in Florida. During this time, his lawyer brought down documents to him and on the 29 of December 1974, he finally picked up his pen and with the backdrop of the Polynesian Village Hotel, ended the greatest, most recognized, rock ‘n’ roll band in history by signing his name at the bottom of the page.
Another fun fact about the Polynesian Resort recognized Walt Disney himself. It was stated that Walt loved the Polynesian culture ever since he visited Hawaii back in the 1930’s. For this reason, the resort was part of Walt’s original plans for the “Florida Project” and it was envisioned as a continuation of Adventureland from the Magic Kingdom. This is much like the Contemporary Resort is a continuation of Tomorrowland, and Fort Wilderness is a continuation of Frontierland.

Creative School for Children was established back in 1976. Originally called UCF's Child Care Center, today Creative Schools has been operating for more than 30 years. They offer a safe, convenient and nurturing environment for the children. They originated with this in mind, to offer child care services to all UCF students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community as well. They engage nearly 500 students per year, and employ early childhood professionals with 12-25 years of experience. With the highest accreditation available for child care centers, this organization has plenty to offer not only for their students but every around them as well.

Before opening the first Jeremiah's, the owner, Jeremy Litwack had been around the business for years because in high school, he bought italian ice from a local vendor, and sold it outside of the Philadelphia Mint. After this he studied marketing at the University of Deleware. This exposure into the business, helped him soon rent out a local warehouse to begin experimenting with recipes to create some Italian ice of his own. In 1996, he opened his first Jeremiah's ever on Aloma in Winter Park. Closely after that opening, stores were then opened by UCF, in Maitland, Winter Springs, and Lake Mary, with plans of future expansion. Jeremiah's just recently expanded into their newest store in the Waterford plaza. The store has 40 different flavors, some of the most popular being mango, cookies and cream, scoop froggy frog, and pnutty. Jeremiah's is now blossoming into a larger business and is recognized locally as one of the best treats in town. Events such as football games, charity events, art displays, festivals, and special promotions are also using Jeremiah's to lure people to come out.

Status Automotive doesn't have a very long history opening up in 2006, but the vehicles and work done at this shop can be told forever. Many different types of clientele get work done at this shop and are given premier service. The owner of the company, Justin Ma, has always been interested with the automotive industry since a kid. From having dirt bikes to modifying his own vehicle, the hobby has always stuck with him. He received education from Seminole Community College before they became a state college. After getting his degree in the field he decided to open up his own shop doing all sorts of work. He didn't want to limit his shop to just the basics such as maintenance and repair, so he decided to do various work. Now the shop has grown substantially and been moved to a different location in order to obtain more work. As the company grew, Justin realized the older location didn't have enough work space or storage space for the amount of projects he was taking on. Now since he has moved to a much larger location, more work can be done and cover more customers at the same time. A major expo called SEMA is held in vegas and Justin attends this for his company. SEMA stands for Specialty Equipment Market Association and is the biggest show for new innovations in the Automotive Industry. Justin attends this invite only show in order to follow new trends in the field to expand on his business. Status Automotive is now involved in all types of work ranging from audio, lifts, fabrication, repairs, and accessories. Justin started off with ambition when opening up the company and now has an unique shop in the industry.
The Rosen College Apartments were opened in 2005 on the Rosen campus. Together, the two buildings can house 400 residents and 8 resident assistants. The slogan of the apartments is, "Study, work, play and live in the heart of central Florida's hospitality industry!" You truly are in the center of it all. Theme parks such as Disney, Universal and SeaWorld are all minutes away. The apartment community includes a pool, community center, grill area and a sports field. Security is a big concern for the Rosen campus. The campus is gated and requires a barcode to get in. The two apartment buildings are keycard access only, as well as each individual apartment. Staff members are available 24/7 to assist residents in the Rosen Community Office. The staff here includes one area coordinator, one senior secretary, eight resident assistants, one office assistant, and four residence hall and apartment patrol. The campus is also monitored by UCF Police Department. The apartments come furnished and the laundry is even free! Shuttle services also can take students to UCF's main campus. Living on campus at the Rosen College apartments gives students the feel of a small college with all the resources and excitement of a large university.

There is a lot of history with my discourse community. My discourse community I am writing my paper on is the UCF football program. The UCF football program been around for 34 years and had their first season in 1979. Over these 34 years they went through many division changes to get to the well-known program they are today. They started out as a division III University in 1979, and after conference changes, they are now a division I program.
ReplyDeleteThe first coach of the UCF football program was Don Jonas and over the years there have been three others and now current coach, George O’Leary. Coach O’Leary has been coaching since 2004 and he really turned the program around. Since O’Leary started he has been very successful by winning games and recruiting good players which has helped shape the program.
Although UCF has more financial resources today, when they first started they had very little money. In fact, FSU coach Bobby Bowden donated uniforms and cleats to the program since they didn’t have the money to buy their own. One thing that O’Leary has been successful at is bringing in resources which have helped the program grow.
Because O’Leary has a lot of power over the football program and done a lot of things well, people really look up to his leadership. In our discourse community he is looked at as a ruler and the person who is in charge. It was interesting doing my observations and watching the team. Every time he walked in a room people would stop what they’re doing and show respect.

The Catholic Campus Ministry here at UCF was formed 25 years ago, but has been in its current form for about the past 9 years. In 2003, CCM moved from having their main office in the Student Union to its own building on Collegiage Way off of Alafaya Trail right across from campus. At this time, Fr. David Scotchie was the priest in charge of campus ministry and the organization was associated with Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Community in Winter Park, FL. The following year, Fr. Stephen Parkes took over as the priest campus minister. During his time with campus ministry, Fr. Parkes was chosen by the Bishop to found a new parish in Oviedo which is now known as My Precious Blood Catholic Church. So the connection with My Precious Blood is now stronger than the connection CCM had with Sts. Peter and Paul Church. The mission of the organization is the same today as it was the day it started, to provide a spiritual home and a place of worship for Catholic students that attend UCF and its surrounding colleges.

To the Kappa Deltas today, the often-told story of the sorority’s founding sounds almost like a fairy tale. Kappa Delta sorority was founded on October 23, 1897 at State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia and since then has grown into a national sorority of over 230,000 members, over 200 chapters and over 500 chartered alumnae chapters. It is extraordinary that this organization sprung from only four young women in small-town Virginia, with two of the girls only 15 years old. Kappa Delta’s early leaders, including Lenora Ashmore Blackiston, Mary Sommerville Sparks Henderick, Sara Turner White, Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson, were women of vision. National Headquarters is the nerve center of Kappa Delta the corporation located in the Southwind section of Memphis Tennessee and mirroring their own growth and complexity and aspiration. Kappa Delta also holds a National Convention, a remarkable events which began in 1903 and is held every two years. It is an important meeting where the voting convention delegates, the supremem governing body of the sorority, conduct the business of Kappa Delta. Along with its two well-known philanthropies, Girl Scouts of the USA and Prevent Child Abuse America, Kappa Delta proudly honors its historical philanthropies including Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Virginia and Orthopedic Research Awards. In 1998, Kappa Delta established a national partnership with the Girl Scouts of the USA and since then, has been the only sorority to have a national collaboration with Girl Scouts. In 1999, Kappa Delta created National Women’s Friendship Day, which is now known as International Women’s Friendship month and encourages women to celebrate their female friends. Further committing to building confidence in girls and women across the country, in 2009 Kappa Delta took the lead to organize the Confidence Coalition. And in 2010, Kappa Delta created International Girls Day to celebrate the power and spirit of girls, spreading the message “She Can Do Anything!” every year on November 14th. An Alumna, Kendra Bush, expresses what Kappa Delta means to her by saying, “Kappa Delta will forever remain a part of my life. Not only have I made lifelong friends, I have grown personally. I’ve been able to develop leadership skills while serving on chapter council; I’ve had the chance to serve others through our wonderful philanthropies; I’ve been empowered by the Confidence Coalition, and I’ve learned to strive for only the greatest. Kappa Delta has left a special mark on my heart.”

ReplyDeleteHISTORY OF THE SOCCER CLUB, OCYS
In the spring of 2012, Orlando City Youth Soccer Club was formed through a merger between FSA and CFK (#1 club in Florida). This merger brought together the major soccer clubs in Central Florida, forming a “powerhouse” and enabling the club to attract a larger amount of people from a bigger range of Central Floridians (spanning from Lake Nona to Lake Mary to Apopka). This new club brings an affiliation with a top pro team, over 60 years of experience in youth soccer, and the opportunity for top players to compete in the top two leagues in the United States (USSF Development Academy for boys and ENCL for girls).
HISTORY OF THE SPECIFIC TEAM I HAVE FOCUSED ON
Through this new club, OCYS U-17 95/95 Girls Purple was formed in June, following tryouts in May. While the merger didn’t revitalize the team with a new coach and a plethora of new players, it allowed more coaching resources and new uniforms and gear. Bobby Hurring, who has coached this team for three years (formerly with the FSA club), was elected to be coach again, as well as the Assistant Director for Girls at OCYS. Only five girls have been added to the team’s roster during this year. Some accomplishments of this new team include 1st place in the Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament and 2nd place in Disney’s Soccer Showcase. Over the past few years, this team has gained strength and it’s success has blossomed. Due to the loyalty of the players, love of the game, strong communication, and a family-like bond, this team has grown into being one of the most successful for it’s age group.

History of UCF Baseball
The UCF baseball team first started out as the club baseball team which I am apart of now. As we all know, UCF was originally named Florida Technical University. The baseball team first started in 1970 as the club team and then the real Division I team began in 1973. The UCF team wasn’t named the Knights but rather the FTU Goldsox. UCF was also apart of the Atlantic Sun league which is apart of the NCAA.
UCF has been ranked decent over the years. The highest ranking that UCF has been is number seven in the nation. UCF is not in the SEC or the ACC like most of the larger schools like FSU and UF, but instead they are apart of the C-USA, which stands for Conference USA. It is still a Division I but they are the schools that aren’t as skilled or overly recruited like the major athletic schools like FSU, LSU, and UF. Next year UCF is headed into the Big East and will play better schools like Memphis, Louisville, UCONN, and USF.
The baseball team plays on Jay Bergman field on the UCF campus. Conference championships occurred in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. There have been a total of six coaches. The current coach is Terry Rooney. Obviously the team mascot is the Knight and their colors are black and gold.

ReplyDeleteThe Florida Rush soccer club is a branch of Rush Soccer. Rush Soccer represents over 34,000 soccer players in the world. They promote healthy lifestyles using the beautiful game of soccer. They put their members in a positive and safe atmosphere, providing the youth with the necessities and training to become experienced players. The Colorado Rush Soccer Club established Rush Soccer in 2002. Their intention was to expand the coaching and player development that the Colorado Rush Soccer Club currently upheld. Rush Soccer states that their primary objective is “to develop a national level club cooperative system that offers substantial opportunities for national corporate sponsorship and foundation support, provides the framework for a national coach and player development network, and will serve a significant centralized pool of talent for consideration by European, MLS, NCAA, US National and Olympic soccer programs.” There are 28 clubs that are now a part of Rush Soccer, including Denver, Colorado Springs, Virginia Beach, Albuquerque, Houston, Kansas City, Anchorage, Honolulu, Detroit, Boise, Memphis, Lexington, Philadelphia/Trenton, Bend, Southern California, Orlando, Seattle, Atlanta, Des Moines, Little Rock, Madison, Bowie, Atlantic City, Phoenix, Akron, and New York City. Beginning in 2009, Rush Soccer expanded to the International level. Rush Soccer now has partnerships with Nkomazi (a South African village), Gambia, Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana, Togo, Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Zimbabwe and two South African clubs in Africa, Uruguay, Brazil, Thailand, and New Zealand. They also plan on continuing to expand even further.
2012 was a monumental year for the Florida Rush soccer club. The U-18 team was the first team ever (including boys and girls), from Central Florida, to have won a national championship since the UYSA began hosting the national championships in 1976. In 2011, the U-18 team had not gone very far in the National tournament. Therefore, they made it their goal to work hard and hopefully make an impact the following year. In 2012, their perseverance and hard work paid off. It was a tremendous achievement not only for the players, the coach, and the club, but for the state of Florida as well. How do I know? I was on this team ;)

Amici’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria was formed just 5 years ago. The welcoming addition to this dining scene is its location. The history of Amici’s is all based around a non crowded easy to find plaza. Surrounded by only a few neighborhoods, this allows Amici’s to have many regular customers which lead to closer relationships between its workers and customers. In order to acquire this location, the chef/owner of Amici’s, Dave Dashi, and his wife Valentina (who is a supervisor at Amici’s) were forced to go into debt and take out a large loan. Dave Dashi says, “Starting a restaurant business, in fact, any business, requires a lot of responsibility and determination that you will succeed. There will be times when you lose money, things get hard, and you have to let people go, but you still have to have the mind set of moving forward because without the strive to actually succeed and please your customers, that could lead to your downfall.” Once the two owners took the plaza space and built a beautiful setting of a restaurant inside, they needed to get their name out there in order to get workers and customers. After months of having a help wanted sign out front of their store and on the side of the road, Amici’s was able to interview many people based off customer satisfaction skills and genuine niceness, and they acquired a solid group of workers to represent what “Amici’s” meant; friend/friendly. Once the business officially opened up, yes slowly customers came but the restaurant was not blooming or at its highest peak. In order to get more customer’s Amici’s invested into advertising. Dave and Valentina decided to advertise through the local professional baseball team, putting a banner or two on the outside of the stadium and maybe some catering. Amici’s main form of advertising actually came from an annual golf tournament though. Since the start of their business Dave and Tina decided to hold annual golf tournaments at the Suntree golf course in Melbourne, Florida. They did this to benefit the Brevard PALS Autism Coalition but to also get their name across the neighborhood. Amici’s held their “4th annual Amici’s golf tournament” October 7th, 2012. Once invested into advertising, Dave and Valentina turned Amici’s into a very popular restaurant that is always pumping happy customers in and out for every open hour of every open day.
The Station Bar & Grill was opened January 7th of this year. With that being said, it is clear that this institution hasn’t been opened long enough for it to have major history behind it, however, with time that’ll change entirely. The owner of this establishment is Mikey “Stylez” Rubino, who is also the creator of Evolve Group which has successfully “evolved” in to Orlando’s largest entertainment conglomerate. Mikey opened up The Station because he realized that there was a huge gap in the market and saw a major opportunity in establishing this bar so close to UCF. He recognized that cheap college bars that offer low quality (for lack of a better word) food and substandard alcohol are about a dime a dozen; his vision was to create an esthetically pleasing establishment with high quality food and drinks at a great price. With the help of his Evolve group team, he has been able to offer UCF students a bar experience far from the accustomed. His long term goal is to one day franchise his business and have The Station recognized on a national level.

ReplyDeleteConfisco's Grill at Islands of Adventure was first opened on May 28, 1999, with the rest of the park. It was opened as one of two full service restaurants inside the theme park that guests could patronize instead of the fast food cafeterias. The restaurant is open everyday the park is and is open from lunch until dinner. It is also the only restaurant in Islands of Adventure with a full service bar attached. The menu that is in use today is similar to the original with modifications by our Head Chef because he has his own recipes that we prepare on a daily basis. Our restaurant is mostly overshadowed in respect to the other full service restaurant at IOA, Mythos, because it has been rated as the "best theme park restaurant in the world" for the past six years, which honestly does not make any sense but we have always had a good service record and we do what we can.
The international organization of Chabad started in 1772 with Bal Shem Tov and it was when the Jews in Russia and throughout Eastern Europe were having a hard time adjusting to the cultural settings of Eastern Europe. Due to their hardships, thye were treated poorly and there was a large drift between the simple people and the scholars, as the scholars did not respect the simple people. Thus, and Bal Shem Tov changed the way people related to Judaism, by showing the scholars that simple people are important and to respect them. Since he was such a big scholar the scholars often looked to him and, the Chabad philosophy started on the grounds that “every Jew is important... and that were not just here for the world to come, we’re here to live and do mitzvahs and study the torah.” This concept expanded throughout Europe by a man named Magidod who continued these concepts throughout his life, with his followers/students later branching out. Thus, the International Chabad organization started with the Alter Rebbe and who continued the chabad philosophy with the torah, saying it should be learnt and understood and not just felt.
ReplyDeleteThis mindset was brought into different countries, including the U.S. Throughout many states, especially New York, many people began to follow this conservative Jewish concept.
Years later in the late 1900’s and early 2000’s, this concept reached the collegiate level, grew to several colleges throughout the country. The University of Central Florida’s Chabad began in 2006, with Rabbi Chaim Lipskier and his wife Rivkie. The two began the program with only 10 participants in the first Shabbat dinner. As they continued to grow, they reached more and more students each year, starting more programs as it grew. Currently, the Chabad group at UCF reaches around 800 students each year, and is continuously growing in size. Last November, they hosted their largest event “Shabbat 500,” where they served a Shabbat meal for 500 students on the UCF campus. Chabad at UCF holds classes, events and services on a weekly basis for students who are interested in furthering their Jewish heritage, and is open to any Jews. This organization embodies the original concept from Bal Shem Tov about making every Jew valued and continues learning and growing from the teachings of the torah.

Kappa Alpha Theta is the first Greek letter fraternity among women. Theta was founded on January 27, 1870 at DePauw University in Indiana by a woman named Bettie Locke. Bettie was asked by her male friends in FIJI if she would wear their badge as a “mascot”, however they wouldn’t tell her their secrets which is what the badge represents so she declined. Bettie’s father was a Beta Theta Pi and he knew the ins and outs of fraternity life. He suggested to her the thought of creating a woman’s fraternity. She took this into deep consideration and after planning, designing and initiating herself and her three friends Alice Allen, Hannah Fitch Shaw and Bettie Tipton, Kappa Alpha Theta was born. Now there are more than 170 chapters of Kappa Alpha Theta and supports CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) as their international philanthropy.
The Eta Theta chapter of Theta here at UCF was founded in 2000 and on November 19, 2000 received its charter. In 2010, Theta was chosen to receive a house on campus and houses over 40 sisters. There are currently over 160 members and 19 will be initiated on April 19th.

Origin of ISUE – Interactive Systems & User Experience Lab
In my interview with Dr. Joe LaViola, professor here at UCF, I’ve discovered that he created the program. Back when he was in graduate school, he was researching in different areas relating to interfaces, pen-based interfaces, and computer-human interactions. After receiving his Ph.D in Computer Science at Brown University in 2005, Dr. LaViola came here to UCF. Wanting to continue his research, he decided to create the ISUE research program. The reason for the program being named Interactive Systems & User Experience is so the research program can have multiple areas of research relating to interfaces and computer-human interactions rather than just one area of research. So far, a lot of success in this research program. Professor LaViola and some of his researchers have written papers that were accepted into publication in websites that deals with such research. They have also created programs that enabled humans to control a helicopter using a Kinect Sensor instead of the traditional remote controllers that were originally used and also created a program known as Minds of Chimera. Minds of Chimera is a recreation of Minecraft using programming language that users can learn how to make machines execute an action. This program helps gives a more understanding of how machines are used to perform instructions as well as possibly discovering how to program machines to execute a set of more advanced and sophisticated instructions.

Since my community is a first grade class, I am going to talk about the history of this specific class starting from the beginning of the school year. Some history about the teacher, she was born and raised in South Florida, and moved to Port Orange in 1990. She has been a full time teacher for 7 years, starting first grade at Horizon Elementary in 2005. The students of this year’s class came from Kindergarten also at Horizon. There is one student who is a “hold back”, which is a student who’s teacher the year before felt that he was not ready for 2nd grade. Around mid-July of 2012 is when the teacher gets her class list; which includes name, birthdate, gender, and ethnicity. The teacher gets no other information on these kids, whether they are smart or behavior problems. On Thursday August 9th, 2012 was “Meet the Teacher Day.” Mrs. Costa says that, “this is a very exciting day for me; I get to meet my students and their parents for the first time to tell them my plans for the year.” She also says it is a very exciting day for the kids too. So as you can see these classes do not have very much of a history together before the school year gets started. They meet once and only get to talk individually for maybe 5 minutes. It seems the teacher and the children go into the first day of school kind of blinded. “It is not until the 3rd or 4th week that you get to know who these kids really are.” Says Mrs. Costa as I sat down to talk to her about her history with her class.

ReplyDeleteRichard J. H. Gottheil was a language professor at Columbia University as well as a leader in the early American Zionist movement. Professor Gottheil became the founder of Z.B.T. on December 29, 1898 when he decided to gather a group of Jewish college students from the New York City area to create a Zionist youth society. At first Z.B.T. had a different meaning and was founded as a fraternal group for Jewish college students who, at the time, were barred from joining other fraternities because of their Jewish heritage. It was obvious that there was a need for a Greek-letter fraternity for Jewish students and many other Zionist groups were emerging and spreading rapidly. In 1903 Z.B.T. was prompted to change the direction it was going in and became Zeta Beta Tau, the world’s first Jewish fraternity. ZBT started growing exponentially. By 1909 there were already 13 chapters in the northeast and the 14th chapter to be established was at Tulane University in New Orleans, which brought ZBT to the south and helped expand the organization nationally. In 1954, at the National Convention the Constitution, ritual, and internal procedures were amended and ZBT became non-sectarian. From 1945 to 1969 ZBT expanded from 30 to 80 chapters. ZBT today is actually a series of mergers or a conglomerate of five different fraternities. Starting in 1959 when Phi Alpha merged into Phi Sigma Delta, then in 1961 Kappa Nu merged into Phi Epsilon Pi. Finally in 1969-70, Phi Sigma Delta and Phi Epsilon Pi merged into Zeta Beta Tau. In 1989, as an effort to stop hazing, ZBT abolished pledging and there by the second-class status that came with it. In turn ZBT established a Brotherhood Program with standards, programs for education, bonding and earning Brotherhood status that would apply to all new brothers and current brothers of ZBT. Throughout the years Zeta Beta Tau has been progressive and always open to new concepts which is made clear by its past from founding, becoming non-sectarian, and abolishing pledging to solve the problem of hazing when many others simply ignored the problem.

Jennifer Siebel, the CEO of Miss Representation, was initially an actress in both films and television programs. Often she was the focus of the camera, so the standards she had to hold for herself and her body were high. But soon she became pregnant with her daughter, her body changing and the camera drifting from her spotlight. It was then that she realized that her daughter would have to grow up in a society in which she would not be respected in the same way a man would, nor valued in the way that a man would. She wanted her daughter to grow up in a society that would respect her for her brilliance, activism, and new perspectives, not her body, what she was wearing, or how she looked. A man would never be judged in such ways, but a female politician like Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton will get the backlash of an audience dominantly judging by her aesthetic rather than her ideals. The group was originally founded upon the creation of the documentary Miss Representation. This documentary comes face to face with the harsh realities of consumerism and the risks sellers will be willing to take to promote their product, even if the respect and dignity of a young woman is put on the line in the process. This eye-opening film led to the ultimate formation of the activism group Miss Representation that follows in the same path. Miss Representation seeks to eliminate disrespect from advertisements and other forms of media and to reform the perspectives of those in our society, redirecting their attention to social and sexual equality. Women should not be conditioned to believe that because of their gender they have no chance to become the next big politician, or even the next president. Society conditions them to believe they're weak, while the feminism that Miss Representation exemplifies grants them strength to fight back.

The National Organization for Women started in 1966 at a small hotel room in Washington D.C. A group of about 20 women gathered to discuss how angered they were about sex discrimination in the workplace. The acronym N O W was written on a paper napkin, and that’s where the name originated. In only a few months the membership count grew to 300 men and women and continued to prosper from there. Betty Friedan who established the secret hotel meeting became the first president of the organization, and within the first year they adopted the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and repeal of abortion laws. NOW was the first national organization to endorse the legalization of abortion.
Some other special events that have taken place since the beginning of NOW are The Discrimination Pregnancy Act is passed in 1978 by member Phineas Indritz, in 1981 the organization launches a nationwide campaign to stop the Human Life Amendment, which would prohibit all abortions, and in 1984 NOW holds its first Lesbian Rights Conference. As for nationwide records, they conducted a march in 1992 called March for Women’s Lives that included 750,000 marchers. The largest civil rights demonstration recorded in America to this very day. Numerous other marches, rallies, and campaigns have taken place over the years and have impacted a lot of women’s rights.
As of today, NOW has over 500,000 members across the U.S., and is known as the largest organization of feminist activists. It is found in all 50 states, and is continuing to expand larger by the day. Its main goal is “to take action” and that’s exactly what they have been doing since 1966.

A brief look into Drifting:
Let us go far east to the land of the rising sun. Officially Nihon-koku, otherwise known as Japan, here is where my discourse community has its roots, this is where drifting was born. It began in the 1960s with the former Grand Prix and Formula Car driver, Kunimitsu Takahashi. Takahashi has been credited as the father of drifting from his days racing on four wheels. He's been known for being the first to approach corners at full speed and slide his car along the corner at very large angle, this technique involving specific throttle techniques was well-received by racing enthusiasts influencing a sort of illegal racing in the angled curvy mountain roads of Japan.
This racing was done on the touge, literally known as mountain roads. These narrow and twisting roads were very nice for drift runs and further popularize the motor sport. Another prominent person that further brought its popularity is Keiichi Tsuchiya, a street racer and a fan of Takahashi. Popularly known as "drift king", his technique further popularized drifting as a motorsport. It was later in 1996 where drifting would make it's landfall out in the west coast when the first competition was held in California, the birthplace of the American drift culture was at Willow Springs Raceway in Willow Springs, California.
After the success of the event and the competition between future American-drift stars, drifting had exploded to become an established motorsport and on the tier of one of the popular forms of automotive competition next to the classic drag racing. The person that hosted the first American competition was the founding father of the D1 Grand Prix, Dajido Inada. With his introduction of drifting in to the United States, the first event ever being held outside of Japan, his competition caused a domino effect that led to establishment of drift culture around the world with international competitions coming out from practically nothing.

The beginning of my discourse community dates back eight years when its founder Thomas Thoss, formed it because he had gone to Mid Florida tech to get his computer basics training. He later on went of to get his Bachelors and Masters in computer science. The class was at risk of closing because of the lack of students, but he worked with the OCPS officials in order to keep the class going, eventually gaining more students, keeping the class open.
The class's main purpose was initially to teach students how to build a PC and all the components that it requires. But under Mr. Thoss's leadership the class now includeds new subjects and opportunities such as Networking, Securities and Competition opportunities in the SkillsUSA organization in the IT division. This organization was formed to keep American workforce skilled at their field before the went job hunting. Many students participate in different IT fields and some did very well in the past.
Maged Gazaway, the Egyptian instructor I interviewed, became an instructor of this class based solely on his technical knowledge and experience in the IT field. But he still had to take courses in order to qualify as a formal instructor. He began in 2011 as his first class teaching Dual Enrollment kids from high school while Mr. Thoss instructed the adults in the next room. Mr. Gazaway had to get used to the teaching environment and get past the language barrier because of his Egyptian background. However, that did not stop him form striving and succeeding in overcoming the problem after which he helped many of the kids gain more interest in the class through his instruction. This year he was more prepared and the community grew even more yet still keeping the same laid back attitude. But Mr. Gazaway still keeps an air of strictness so that the kids can get their work done.

American Tackle Company (ATC) has been conducting business for over 20 years. Originally founded in Massachusetts, the company started in the home of Mr. Joseph Meehan II. Mr. Meehan provided fishermen with the components to build their own custom fishing rods. Mr. Meehan remained the owner for many years before passing the business along to his son Joseph (Joe) Meehan III. Joe remains the president of ATC to this day. ATC quickly grew in popularity over the years and eventually moved its headquarters to its present day location in Oviedo, Florida. Our network of locations consists of this headquarters in Oviedo and also an office in Massachusetts, Sweden, and China. My ethnology project will be conducted over the discourse community at our main headquarters but also will entail discourse between each of our offices.

My community is the second teachers of pleasant hill elementary. The School was opened in 1988. The school is located in Osceola County. The grade levels are Kindergarten to fifth grade. Recently the school has added five or more pre-k classrooms. It has the same floor plan as Fern Creek Elementary in BVL. It is currently an “A” school. Every year the school has an aspect to it that makes it better each year. There are a few teachers and staff who have been here since the beginning. Some teacher have either retired or moved to another school or town. There are currently about 70 teachers at the school and about 25 or so staff. When the school open there was about 50 teachers and 15 staff. With only a few buildings with 10 classroom per building. Now the school has a new building that hold 20 classrooms and many teacher have hired. The school is home of the Panda’s. Its colors are black, white, and red. The school has gone through so many principles. Since I’ve known the school there has been two principles. My mother works at this school and has been since 2006. It is a really great school. I am planning to do my internship at this school in the future. I would love to work at PHE in the future.

The University of Central Florida Police Department (UCFPD) was founded in 1973. However, it was in 1963 that the University was founded and had its first classes in 1968; long before the UCFPD came to light. Interestingly enough, before the UCFPD was founded, the campus was patrolled by the local county police. Nowadays, the UCF Police Department consist of sworn law enforcement officers who are permitted to have in their possession, a firearm; and are authorized to make arrests within their jurisdiction which the entire 1,415 acres of UCF’s campus. Officers patrol the both campuses 24/7 365 days a year to ensure to safety of students, faculty and everyone else on the property owned by the University. Furthermore, the UCF Police Department has contact with neighboring agencies such as Seminole County Sheriff’s office, Orlando Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Office in case of high risk emergencies where more law men are needed in order to continue to provide a safe environment for everyone. In the 45 years the UCFPD has been serving the people of the UCF community, all members have been embracing and will continue to do so by holding true to their core values which are: accepting responsibility for our actions, exhibit respect of the individual, maintain open lines of communication within both the community and our department, ensure fairness to those we serve and with whom we work, demonstrate a commitment to excellence, solve problems in the community and demonstrate sensitivity to opposing points of view; all of which demonstrates the ethic of the UCFPD.

ACTS Indian River Estates (East and West) in Vero Beach, Fl is one of the 23 retirement community living homes in the United States. The story of ACTS began in the early 1970's when a suburban Philadelphia pastor and members of a nondenominational church sought out a new and better way of living for their retired church members. They wanted a kind of retirement home that combined an independent living retirement style with a quality healthcare environment. This group built what is known today as Fort Washington Estates which opened in 1972 in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. They then opened retirement home communities in Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. ACTS opened Indian River Estates East and West in 1986. They recently just finished building a 100,000-square-foot new care center building in April of 2012 that cost $28 million.
Complete Network Solutions, Inc. is a locally owned and operated business that has been growing since it was established during the summer of 2000. The owner, Robert Concelmo, has been working in the field of telecommunications for over 25 years. Before creating CNS, Robert began working at Shands Hospital in Gainesville Florida. There, he and other workers began working on the hospitals first networks. These networks would connect over 100’s computers at Shands, and would eventually grow to connect over 100,000 of computers and counting.
ReplyDeleteCNS was established with 5 employees in an old office shack. The company continued to grow, by moving from simple cable pulls and installations, to larger jobs and specialized systems. In 2009, CNS escaped the shack and moved into a new, larger building. With a staff of currently over 30+ workers, the company has seen a massive development since it’s birth.

My discourse community is the Oakland Park Pop Warner Football League. Recently, which i just noticed, the whole league has been moved to the Miami-Dade county area. So it is a little bit further but I've been coaching since about my Freshman year in highschool. So the league is now known as the Greater Miami Pop Warner League (GMSF). This was chartered by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., which is a national non-profit organization, in 1972. These pop warner leagues are actually the only yout sports program that makes you maintain a substantial level of academic achievement just to even participate. We go from the weights level of Pee-wee all the way up to unlimited. I currently am on the coaching staff of the 135 lbs Little River Saints. Generally, the kids i coach are in the 7th or 8th grade. We are location in Miami at Little River park. We rep the purple and white and we always keep our chant, "My Name Is Victory". We stress to the kids how much communcaiton is key to win the ball game but subliminally we tell them to have the best times of their lives. As competitive as this league gets, the kids have a great time and it doesn't reach the seriousness of high schools. We strive to get these wonderful kids to understand that high school is taken seriously. But school alwyas comes first. I came from St. Thomas Aquinas and played football for a year. The wide receiver coach is the hall of famer Chris Carter and we have the legendary head coach George Smith. There's no joking around when practice and games roll around. I was more involved in the basketball program than the football but i still know they both take discipline. Basically, these kids have the time of their lives, do well in school, get disciplined and ready for the high school level and win. We just remember, "My Name Is Victory".

Well the history for my discourse community is relatively short because it hasn’t been around that long. My discourse community has been around for 16-17 years. It all started when Dr. Linda Walters started working at UCF as a teacher and a researcher. Every summer for research Dr. Walters leaves for the keys research she does. Each year the research lab would grow by about 4or 5 people. Our research lab almost always wins the competitions in the presentation of their research but other than that there really isn’t any more history to my discourse community. We go to competitions every 2 weeks pretty much. As of last year they started allowing people from the learn program to enter their lab. Now it is a lab they has a lot of people and is pretty well known in its own community.

Primera Plastic Surgery center broke ground in 2003. Dr. Gross was currently practicing in another smaller office in Altamonte Springs and knew he needed a much a larger facility. Primera Plastic Surgery Center was going to be just this. The plan was to construct a 13,000 sq. ft. facility that had all the accommodations necessary to run successful surgery center. This includes a full sized and fully functional operating room, four exam rooms, two laser rooms, a kitchen, a waiting room, and two bathrooms. Construction began in mid September of 2003 and was finished almost exactly one year later. Dr. Gross worked for four moths before construction began to design the office. He worked with architects to get the exact atmosphere appropriate for a facial surgery center. And thus in October of 2004 Primera Plastic Surgery Center opened its doors. This was the climax of Dr. Gross and his medical career. He now is the head of the two surgery centers that he has opened as well as a spa and weight loss clinic. Before the transition from his office in Altamonte Springs Dr. Gross employed four people, in his new facility he employs fourteen people.

The history of the discourse community I have chosen began in 2005. I joined Gulf Coast Swim Team in 2004 with my coach at the time, Jeff Cain. After a year had passed him and co-coach Jim Lindberg decided to break away from the massive team GCST was becoming. My sister and I broke away with a few other swimmers because Cain was the coach who had gotten me into swimming. Along with the fact that the pool we would be using was twenty minutes closer than the prior. Cain and Lindberg started the team from scratch, naming us the CCS blue fins. It took us six months to be considered a sanctioned team and I was present for the entire experience until last year when I moved to college. Cain and Lindberg speak fondly of the memories building from the beginning of the now popular organization.

The Walt Disney World Entertainment community was officially created at the opening of Magic Kingdom within the resort in Orlando, Florida on October 1st, 1971. However, it has its roots all the way back in 1955, when Walt Disney opened his first theme park, Disneyland, in Anaheim, California. After its incredibly, almost shocking, success Walt decided he wanted to create another park “somewhere in paradise”, and to him this meant the very center of Florida, which is namely Orlando. Because of the unsupportive locals, Walt Disney was forced to create a bunch of fake small businesses and purchase the land only a few acres at a time, in order to disguise what was soon to come to the area as it was the local’s nightmare. When all was said and done Walt Disney had acquired over 30,000 acres, or three times the size of Manhattan. This land was dubbed “Walt Disney World Resort”. First was built Magic Kingdom, and of course came the need for “cast members”, especially characters and parade performers, and the Walt Disney World Entertainment community was born. In its infant age, the community was home to 5,500 cast members. Now, 42 years later, its employees over 66,000 “cast members” split into over 3,700 different jobs and duties, and over 8,000 of them are character performers or parade cast or dancers, all entertainment community members. Even within the entertainment community there are so many varying roles, and even an unsaid “food chain”; dancers, parade performers, “fur” (headed) characters, and ultimately “face” characters. A lot of mystery falls in with these performers, as no one really thinks of them as people when you come incontact with them as a guest, Princess Cinderella IS Cinderella, not a brunette in her twenties, right? Correct. The embodiment of the characters sometimes shines through with the real people who play them, and sometimes not for the best as it causes affirmation of this “food chain” and how sometimes those that plays different roles tend to not interact.

The discourse community I am researching is Quotes, the PR Club at UCF. It started in 1981 as one of the first student chapters of the Florida Public Relations Association. As one of the largest and newest chapters of the FPRA in the state, it aims to cultivate future industry professionals who will thrive in the field of communication. Their mission statement from then to now has not changed and to me that displays a strong focus on what the group set out to do. They encourage members to attend meetings which have always been held in the Student Union, they host programs and events which provide quality content and the expansion of opportunities for the members through workshops and professional networking opportunities. I have been to a couple meetings and events and it has really opened my eyes to the world of Public Relations. There are numerous opportunities for each and every person who pursues them. After studying this community more and more I have become so much more anxious to find my passion in PR and grow with it.
The Chabbad movement began with a man named Shneur Zalman of Liadi, known by many as the Alter Rebbe (old rabbi). He lived in Russia in the mid 1700’s and wanted to bring life back to the intellectual aspect of Judaism. Chabbad is a Hebrew acronym for chochmah (wisdom), binah (understanding), and da’at (knowledge). Chabbad was founded upon these three pillars, and continues to grow based upon them. The Alter Rebbe was the first of seven rabbis who changed Judaism, as the world knew it. Each rabbi brought a new addition to the community, spreading more light of knowledge where there was darkness. Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson, the second to last rabbi of this succession of rabbis, brought about a drastic change in the way the Chabbad movement communicated with the world. He emphasized the importance of outreach, reaching out to Jews across the world in order to give every Jew a chance to learn about spiritual concepts. However, outreach did not spring into full effect until his son, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, stepped into his father’s position as Rebbe. Menachem Mendel took responsibility to send shluchim (messengers) around the world to spread Jewish knowledge. His mindset can be understood by this: if even a single Jew was in the middle of a town with no other Jews, a messenger was sent there to try to uplift this Jew. With all of that being said, Rabbi Lipskier of Oviedo, Florida began welcoming Jews (mainly college students) around the area several years ago. He is, in essence, a messenger of Menachem Mendel Schneerson. For, although he was not sent from him directly, he would not be here if it were not for Rabbi Schneerson’s plans and actions. Rabbi Lipskier and his wife have worked many long hours for Jews around the Orlando area, spreading light where otherwise there may be darkness. The history of this Chabbad in particular is short and sweet (and still in the making). It began with a few Jews who decided to show up and check it out and has grown into a community of hundreds of Jews who come to the Chabbad for many different reasons.

The Ismaili Youth Basketball Team of Orlando is a relatively new group. Having been formed only 5 years ago to compete in regional tournaments, there is a short history. They have won the tournament the last two years and three of their five competing. With this team only being around for a short time, there is not much information available on the history. From what I have gathered from current players and the coach, there have been plenty of players from this team that have moved on to play in the adults division later on. They are the yearly favorites to win the tournament and rarely fail to disappoint

To get the back ground information on my discourse community I went to the head coach of the program and sought out the information from her, Coach Crystal Tavares.
The Kissimmee Swim Association was formed in 1997 under the leadership of Swim Coach Dave Wathen. Throughout his time there KSA turned out numerous state championship qualifiers at both the age group and senior levels. Coach Wathen also produced Junior National qualifiers during his time at the Kissimmee Swim Association. When Coach Wathen decided to leave the Central Florida Area he turned the program over to Coach Connor Gilbert, a teacher at a local high school. Coach Gilbert was only there for a short time, he quickly realized that between raising three small children and his full time teaching job, running an entire swim program was too much. At this time the team was then turned over to former Navy Seal Tom Nielson. Coach Nielson was the head coach of the Kissimmee Swim Association for five years. Coach Nielson brought the team back to a top rank in the Central Florida are producing new Junior National level swimmers and sending kids off to college on scholarship. In 2007 Coach Crystal Tavares took over a small team from Coach Nielson, only 27 swimmers. Within the first two years, she grew the team to over 60 athletes. Producing some of the top swimmers in the state and southeast, Kissimmee Swim Association is continuing to thrive under her leadership. Coach Crystal has not only had swimmers achieve Southeastern qualifying cuts but KSA swimmers have also gone on to compete for the state of Florida at the All Star Swim Meet over the past few years.
The Kissimmee Swim Association is a coach-owned swim club sanctioned through Florida Swimming and United States Swimming. They compete throughout the Southeastern United States and will soon again be competing on the National level. The program operates out of the Makinson Aquatic Center, a facility owned by the City of Kissimmee. The beginner program focuses on stroke development and introduction into the world of competitive swimming. The age group program focuses on developing athletes from 7 to 13/14 years old into quality well rounded athletes. The senior program at KSA focuses on developing each individual swimmers ability with a strong foundation for endurance and technique. Swimmers feel like they are part of another family when they join the Kissimmee Swim Association, team unity is a primary focus for all groups. This overall is a great program to get involved in if someone is looking for a unified team with healthy competition.

ReplyDeleteThe EXCEL program at UCF began in the year 2006. The amount of members in the program has varied from year to year. In 2006 there was 185 members, in 2007 there was 174, 2008 had 203, 2009 had 182, 2010 had 203, 2011 had 196, and 2012 had the record high of 207. During the years of 2006 to 2010, the EXCEL program had a special class for first year students called the “Applications of Calculus” where they taught all the younger members of the community how calculus is used in the real world. In 2011 however, that class was replaced with a seminar class. This class focused on lectures and activities supporting the EXCEL community which included exploration of STEM fields and majors, and research opportunities. In the spring of 2008, EXCEL was recognized by the National Science Foundation and began to receive funding from them. Over the years there have been many additions to the program. Some of these additions include on-campus housing to incoming freshman in EXCEL only blocks, an EXCEL center that offers free tutoring, and a paid undergraduate research experience offered to sophomore EXCEL members.

ReplyDeleteWhat is Hanamizuki? There’s a simple answer to this question so many people ask to me. Hanamizuki is a restaurant located on I-Drive, the heart of Orlando’s tourist attraction area. The place is a casual dining, geared towards traditional and family style Japanese food items. Hanamizuki, a Japanese word meaning water-flower, is owned by sushi chef Futoshi Kishimoto. He is a native of Japan, and comes from the city of Kyoto. Kyoto is more of the ‘’rural’’ areas of Japan, where traditions are still valued and practiced today. It is much less influenced by ‘’pop-culture’’ compared to other parts of Japanese, for example Tokyo, due to it’s southern location. There is a focus on seasonally food, good technique, intelligence and simple- but complexity with spices. As Mitsubishi CEO, Mr. Soji, describes Hanamizuki as ‘A place where I can come home to Japan, it is truly a gem to find in America.’’ With much of Americans leaning towards fusion-Japanese food, Hanamizuki becomes a refreshing exception, one that amplifies the traditional aspect of Japanese cuisine. Head chef ,Takayama Ushibushi, comments on his theory and philosophy about Japanese cuisine: ‘’The first thing is not to be lazy, Japanese cuisine requires much skill and patience. If I want to make Botamochi (traditional wagashi conferionary) I have to first, soak rice for 4 hours, cook it, pound it for ten minutes with a mortar and pestle while fanning it so it doesn’t get too sticky. And that’s just for the rice cake itself! I still have to make Anko (red bean paste) and Kiniko (roasted soybean powder.)’’ Everything in Hanamizuki Is made from natural ingredients, as evident on head chef’s comment on how he creates a simple dessert. By using ‘’raw’’ food ingredients, one can enjoy the clean flavors without any chemicals or artificial taste. Hanamizuki was founded on 1996, by Momiji Kishimoto (Futoshi’s father.) Mr. Kishimoto learned the art of Sushi making in the prefecture of Nagoya, Japan. His master, Jiro, is considered to be the best sushi chef in the name of history. The late Mr.Kishimoto learned the ways of his father’s, whom learned from Jiro. ‘’When I was ten years old, my father would take me out to pick Ginko seeds in the fall, it would stink so bad!’’-Futoshi comments. He also recalls days with his father where he went to the fish market for the first time: ‘’There’s a huge market in Japan called the (?), fish men would come and sell their best catches of the day. I remember seeing the fish still wobbling around the carts, and octopus moving inside their crates when my father bought them home with us.’’ The practice of building a strong relationship with your fish men was considered the best weapon for any sushi chef. ‘’Without fresh ingredients, you are 100 percent down in profit already.’’-Futoshi. This is only the beginning of the history, there is much to cover.. (tbc)

ReplyDeleteSheridan lumber was founded by Frank Vidal, an ex-car salesman and also an extremely recent immigrant from Cuba. Frank originally never had any interest in woodwork until he reached his early forty’s where he read an article about the value of woodwork as a business. Upon reading that article Frank set about to invest his extra profits from his job as a car salesman into a small warehouse and lot for storing lumber. From that day twenty six years later, Frank Vidal’s small warehouse and lot flourished into a small business worth over five million dollars. Sheridan Lumber has made deals with many clients throughout Florida and the United States and even some international work done in the Caribbean. The lumberyard now consists of four warehouses rather than one and has over four different storage lots.

Burger King is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. They got started in 1954 and a year later, they introduced the King by displaying him on the sign at their Miami location. Five years later, more franchises started to appear around the country and eventually around the world, the first being in Puerto Rico. The goal of the company was to serve quality food with prime ingredients and excellent customer service. They chose the slogan "have it your way" to get it known to customers that they can customize their meals and sandwiches however they wanted. They pride themselves in their flame-broiled burgers rather than the traditional fried burgers that McDonald's and Wendy's were known to serve. They also have a foundation that focuses on providing opportunities to people in the community and strive to have a positive impact. I actually got a scholarship through their Have It Your Way foundation. The community I have chosen to follow is the Hare Krishna community here in Orlando. The Hare Krishnas follow the Bhagavad Gita, a 700 verse scripture that is continuous conversation between Prince Arjuna and Krishna. The official name for the group is the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and it was founded in 1966 in New York City by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad (the Matharaj of the Krishna community I have been following became part of this movement at this time, around the late 60’s and early 70’s). This marks the entry of “Krishna Consciousness” to Western parts of the world, and is immortalized in pop culture and other media artifacts of the time (George Harrison was a Hare Krishna, and many Beatle’s lyrics have the Maha Mantra within them). The teachings of the Hare Krishnas have been imported from India, through a line called the Brahma Madhva Gaudiya sampradaya, from the teacher called Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu (AD 1486-1534). Since its western introduction in 1966, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has now more than 100 temples, ashrams, and cultural centers (that I am familiar with, there is the local temple near the University of Central Florida campus as well as the bustling Hare Krishna community if Gainesville near the University of Central Florida campus that is hosting its own Holi festival this Saturday, April 14th). Locally, the temple has only been around for 5 years, but the devotees that attend are familiar and welcoming.

Florida's Turnpike was created and started in 1957 when just the southern stretch of the highway was made and started running. The construction was started in the early to middle 1950s. The Idea of have a Turnpike run from South Florida to around Central Florida came from a man named Charles Costar. He came up with the idea based on his travels to Florida and the long rides on the local roads to get to the locations he wanted to go to. Based on his Experience witnessing the Pennsylvania Turnpike he envisioned that kind of fast-paced highway in Florida. With the help of the government and Costar they came up with a plan of having bond-financed toll roads where the revenues collected from the customers would help with the payments of the maintenance and expansion of the highway. The Road started off as a 110 mile highway which was then called the Sunshine State Parkway in which now it's called the Florida's Turnpike and now takes over a stretch of 308 miles. This now present stretch starts from Homestead and goes up to about where Wildwood and then merges onto I-75.
The Toll Plaza that I work at opened July 7th, 1995 and this one replaced an old one that was in Wildwood. The Leesburg Toll Plaza was built for the purpose of the Turnpike changing their look and just wanted to keep a modernized look. The only changes over time that happened with the plaza was when they made the Sunpass Transponders they had to make separate lanes and the prices of the tolls ever changing over a couple of years. Later in the future the Florida Turnpike Enterprises wants the whole Turnpike to be either Sunpass paid or the bill will be processed by Toll-By-Plate and there might not be such a thing as Toll Collectors in the future. But for now the plaza looks like it is running smoothly and with the help of everybody involved we do our best to provide the best customer service to our customers for as long as toll collecting by cash payments still exist.
My discourse community is the athletic training community. The history of this has been dated back since Greek civilizations, when competitions were being put on to decide was the strongest, fastest, or even just simply the best man around. in the late 19th century the name athletic trainer started to become more popular. The people competing in the event would sometimes get hurt, and normally just the everyday doctor would help these people but in time, the trainers started to take over and work strictly with the ones who compete in these dangerous activities. In the 1930s there was an organization starting to form, but they were not taken seriously and weren't too recognized by the people. Athletic training has been around for many years and is still growing till this day. Since there are so many competing athletes athletic trainers will always be around and will continue to be a top growing career.
