HI Class,
Welcome back from our week long hiatus. I hope you had some time to rest and recuperate and are ready to make a big push for the finish.
Our last unit calls you to complete an ethnography project where you investigate the culture of a community and look into the driving forces behind its modes and methods of communication. For our first blog, list two separate communities you are interested in looking into for your ethnography project. Beyond listing the community, you should also deliver a paragraph or two about each community showing your knowledge of the communities and explaining why you are interested in looking at those communities.
By the close of the third week of March, you should have completed at least one field site observation (we did an exercise in class showing you how to do double entry note taking before break) and you should establish an informant (someone in the field who you can trust as one to help you understand the community). For blog eleven, which will be due on March 25th, you will write up your first field report (which consists of consolidating your field notes into a narrative).

ReplyDeleteThe two communities I have chosen are my place of work which is selling swim gear at swim meets.
The second is exploring a marketing club on campus because that is what i am majoring in.
For the first group my job consists of going all around Florida and attending swim meets and selling gear for the swimmers. This community will be good to explore because the swimming community has their own set of words and ways to communicate. Although I was not a swimmer I have been learning all the things about swimming such as the meets, gear, different events they swim, and terms they use while swimming.
The second group I might explore is an on campus marketing club to explore my major. I can learn about what my major will be like and what things are talked about and how they communicate. This group will be good to explore because I can start learning more about what I want to do in my major, the types of jobs that can come out of my field, and in what ways we will communicate most.

The two communities I am interested in exploring for my ethnography project are as follow:
1) The restaurant/bar that I work in is definitely my first choice. I think it'll be interesting to explore this community in depth because on a superficial level it seems as though there isn't much to discover, when in all reality there's so much more to this place than meets the eye. Restaurants have their own lingo whether it's readily apparent to outsiders or not. Moreover, I am a hospitality major and therefore see choosing this community as very beneficial to me on a career related level.
2) Evolve group would be my second choice. They are Orlando's largest entertainment conglomerate and their aim is to put Florida's nightlife in a category of its own. I am good friends with the people who run this group and coincidentally work for the chief executive officer, making this community easily accessible to me.
The two communities I am looking at exploring for the project are elementary school classrooms and my dad's office.
ReplyDelete1. My major is Elementary Education so I think it would be both extremely beneficial as well as interesting to examine the ethnography of the classroom. I am already pretty familiar with classrooms because for some of my classes I've had to volunteer in classrooms to gain hands on experience in order to pass get credit for the class. I find it very interesting the ways the teachers communicate with students because it is much harder than saying "Class settle down" for these children to listen. I believe it will be a pretty big challenge seeing as the elementary school level average child is still developing cognitive, emotional, and physical skills. Exploring this setting will also allow me to decide if I really want to dive into this career, or if another career is better suit for me.
2. My second choice is to explore my dad's office setting. My dad owns his own business and I've always been intrigued to know what his typical day is like. My family and I always joke around that my dad doesn't have a real person job because he is always able to meet us for lunch, goes to work around nine and is normally off before four in the afternoon. He often travels for work, however while at home his schedule is completely flexible even though there are four other people that work full time in his office. Because he has a large cliental base I would be interested to spend some time shadowing him to find out how his typical day goes and maybe express some interest in his area of expertise as well.

1. The first community that I want to explore is my biology research lab.I think my biology research lab sill be interesting to explore because it definately has its own language. The way I know of already that they use to communicate is through emails, face to face, and through data in there presentations. Also I think this will be interesting to explore because it will help me get used to the language biology majors speak in. There language mostly consists of terms that have been learner through many years of working in the biology world.
2. The next community that I would like to explore is a medical club. The medical clubs usually communicate by email and meeting. I believe this would be interesting to explore because the medical clubs communication consists of people all striving to get into medical school. Being in this community also allows me to get one step closer to being a doctor while also giving me opportunities to expand my knowledge on the medical field. Exploring this community also introduces you to other interesting communities such as internships at hospitals which have there own way of communicating.

The two communities that I wish to explore are my place of work and the major I am pursuing, website design.
1. I work at LA Fitness, and I think it would be an interesting community to explore because the instructors as well as the trainers all have similar goals to accomplish and hope to assist others in reaching their true fitness potential. The people who attend the gym, at any of its locations, do not understand the extent of hard work and communication that comes with creating a successful atmosphere for the appreciation of self-improvement.
2. Another community I could explore would be the digital media community. Because I have a keen interest in the major, I think it would be a beneficial thing for me to be able to explore what my future occupation would be by following the community and learning through experience. I have a personal family friend that is a website designer for a large corporation and I am fairly certain that she’d be more than happy to take me into their community to become more accustomed and aware of the practices a website designer develops through the occupation itself.

Soccer Community: Since I have been a part of the soccer community here in Central Florida for eight years and have been a member of the same soccer club, I definitely would like to pursue this for my ethnography project. In this community, there are many forms of communication and an obvious “soccer language” is present. This community is very complex when thinking about it and an outsider would have a very difficult time grasping the workings of this community—luckily for me I am an involved member so I feel I could understand the community and interpret it clearly.
2. Work Community (Burger 21): As a second choice, I have thought of exploring my work community further. Since Burger 21 recently opened, I am a new employee to the company and have been learning all about the inner workings of B21. I think it would be interesting to explore this further, as within this community there are many forms of communication, a set of specific terms, and rules that must be upheld.

ReplyDeleteI am interested in the hospitality industry. I work at a hotel near Universal and I am interested in the community there. I know hospitality is mostly about the relationship between a guest and the host. I work at food & beverage area at the hotel and making the guest happy is our number one goal. All the departments within the hotel are connected, so we are required to know a little about everybody’s job within the hotel and we all need to know how to communicate with each other.
The second community I might choose has to do with the law. I am really interested in the business side of law and I might want to explore that career in my future. I think this choice would be good for me because it is an enlightening experience to see if I would want to pursue this career for my future. I would probably have to work hard to get into a community like this, because I do not know anyone who does this. I can talk to the pre-professional advising office to see if they can provide me with this opportunity.
The first community I chose is the community of the UCF Sports Athletic Trainers. This community consists of at least one trainer of each sport’s team playing for UCF. During my daily life at UCF I have often come across this community and would like to deepen my relationship with it and hope to increase my knowledge not only about the technical content but also about how the community works. How each individual trainer interacts with the others, whether there is a rank system and most important how to get into and therefore be part of such a community? Since I have the possibility of being in direct contact with one of the community members through her position as Athletic Trainer for amongst others the Women’s Soccer Team, I am confident about achieving my aims concerning the required ethnography. The reason for choosing this community becomes clear when I consider my major “Sports and Exercise Science”. Not only am I planning to follow the major’s branch of Human Performance which includes learning about Athletic Training but also have I always been very interested in Physical Therapy and in general the human body.
ReplyDeleteThe second community I am considering to observe and work with is the community of the Human Performance Laboratory (HPL), which has its actual lab in the Education Building on the main UCF campus belonging to the department of educational and human sciences. The HPL examines human performances under different circumstances reaching to extremity. The community’s members are continuously aiming to improve the athletes’ performances through applying their observed results in different ways. My decision for this community was also based on the mentioned reasons for my first community. My major and also my relationship with the HPL on a daily basis have made me curious to experience this particular community and to get more information about its research.
I am seeing this task of interacting with both communities as an opportunity for me to get to know more about each community to therefore influence my decision concerning my future occupation. I am well aware of the fact that the period of time I am going to interact with each community is going to be way too short and too cursory for me to straight away make a final decision. However I hope that I will be able to find a particular pathway I want to follow for my later life. Since I am very interested in both types of communities and can also see myself working towards both of them, I hope that my experience will help me evaluate both communities towards my overall interest in the content area each organization covers. This doesn’t mean that one of the communities definitely is going to convince me; it could also mean that I during my time of involvement notice that one particular community isn’t really something I want to be involved with later in life.

I would like to explore my job community that I work at the Leesburg toll plaza. For about a year I have been working at this plaza and I have grown accustomed to the atmosphere, the people, and with helping keep the flow going with the collectors and the good jobs they are doing with collecting money and doing the right things when making mistakes. But I would like to know what goes on Inside with the managers and what happens when these mistakes and problems happen at certain times. Also I would like to know what happen with the money that the collectors collect and where they actually go and how some of the things that go on in the plaza actually go on. There are other things that go on with the techs and other people who come around to help with equipment so these are some things that I would like to learn that goes on around this community that I am now apart of.
I would like to also explore my dad's job community which is a steel company that he works for because to me it seems like it's an interesting job and place to work for and can have some benefits overall. I sometimes see my dad coming home with tablets and smart-phones that the company provides to them to use for the building purposes and helping creating new ideas. So I would like to explore a little more about how that actually works and what they actually do with those blueprints and other designs that his company makes to build these structures. Also I heard that there are meetings that they have to discuss things going on so I would like to see what is actually going on during those meetings and how they would be able to solve things that are going on inside of the company. Even though it might not be a job I might want to do for the rest of my life it would be something that would help me see what people in this type of field actually go through in a regular day basis.

1) The first community I am looking at studying is a group of 1st grade teachers. My mom is a first grade teacher and her fellow teachers work together as a pod. They have weekly meetings, eat lunch together, and coordinate assignments and activities. I spent a lot of time in this community during the semester I took off from school this past year. As I was there pretty often I noticed many things that I found peculiar about this community. I think it would be interesting to go into this community further and see what other things might happen and how it affects their community.
2) The other community I am looking at studying is the kitchen at my place of work. I am a waitress in the dining room so I know how all of that works like the back of my hand. But I have always wondered what really goes on in the kitchen. How they prepare the food choices for the night and how they solve any problems that get in their way. Besides the cooks I am also going to look at the cold-prep person. They are the ones whom make all of the salads, sandwiches, and desserts. Also a kitchen cannot function without our dishwashers who have to make sure all of the cooking tools are cleaned to code. I think following the kitchen staff around would be very interesting because they do a lot and I have always wondered how they do it all so efficiently.

1) The first community I am interested in exploring is my place of employment. I work for a place called American Tackle Company where we sell components to build custom fishing rods. This community will be interesting to explore because it will allow me to look beyond the normal day-to-day operations. We currently have offices in Massachusetts, Sweden, and China, so our communication involves mostly e-mails and typically a company meeting once a month.
2) The second community I am interested in exploring involves my major of environmental studies. I would like to examine the community of a fish hatchery. I have been a fishing enthusiast since I was very young so I am extremely passionate about wildlife management of our waterways. I would like to explore this community to see how communication takes place and what forms of communication they use.
The first community I am considering studying is the Secular Student Alliance at UCF. It is a club for students who are not religiously affiliated (or are atheist, agnostic, etc.) As an atheist, I have been curious about this club since first coming to UCF. I have been told that they do a lot of philanthropy, and rallying on political movements that have to do with maintaining separation of church and state.
ReplyDeleteThe second community I am considering studying is NORML, a club to create awareness about marijuana related issues. My interest in the group goes without saying, and I feel like analyzing the participants and atmosphere may shed some light on what kinds of people actually smoke marijuana as opposed to stereotypes.
1-I plan to do my study at the UCF Chabad Jewish Student Group. For Jewish students who attend UCF, this is a setting where we can go for weekly Shabbat services and dinner, holidays and special events. I go to Chabad at least twice a week, once for a weekly class and the second for Shabbat. This setting is very interesting due to the focus of Judaism with a group of one to two hundred college students. We usually all come together to talk about Judaism, enjoy meals, and pray together for specific holidays. I want to do my study here because I think it will be interesting to further my involvement in this group as well as learn more about it through different people that are involved. With this, I hope to expand my jewish interest during college, and hopefully get more connected to this specific community.
ReplyDelete2- I attend Yoga and Pilates classes every week on the UCF campus. I think it’s a very interesting community based on the location, time and type of classes I attend. There’s a lot of “regulars” who come every week, just like I do. Because of this, I usually talk to some of participants to see how they like the class, why they came, who they came with, etc. I find the classes challenging and interesting, which I think is a big reason why I’m interested in it. I plan to interview the teachers, and the class participants after each class I attend to see how similar or different our experiences may be. I think this is an interesting community due to the huge amount of students at UCF who go to the gym on a regular basis for these classes, as well as their specified interest for these classes.

The First Community I am mulling over is that of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or what my sister and elementary viewings of the play Hair has lead me to refer to them as, the Krishnas. I was raised in a sphere that was heavily saturated with knowledge of theism and theistic themes; the Krishna and Sikh community were some of the most interesting to me, and the nearby bustling Krishna community tipped the odds in their favor. I would like to hear more about how they refer to each other, teach the doctrine, ways of dress, and etc. I would like to know what makes someone a Krishna. I would also like to know how they refer to themselves (e.g., Christianity = Christian, Islam = Muslim), for I feel like the term "Krishna" may be ignorant. I have already attended a meeting, and plan to go to temple this weekend, so this seems like a fitting choice.
My second option is the local music scene, most specifically that of Punk. This is a community I have been on the fringes of for quite sometime, enjoying the genre, fashion, and themes (also a surprising amount of punk-made/-centric media), though I have never considered myself a part of. I plan to do a bit of participant observation (I think the only real way to understand this scene is total immersion, anyway) by going to shows at local places, reading local zines, and observing the media and formats in which subscribers of the culture communicate, and signs of belonging /how they recognize each other. As previously stated, I am a fan of the genre and off shoots, history, fashion and related media (both Francessca Lia Block's and Charles De Lint's, two of my favorite childhood authors, modern fairy tales had punk themes, and I have been a longtime lover of zines and punk webcomics, such as Liz Suburbia's Sacred Heart and the readily anticipated Naija Punx zine, about Nigerian-American Punks, which is a niche that flicks nearly every box of mine) so this venture would not only be informative but also enjoyable.

The first community I have chosen to look into for our ethnography project P.F. Changs. I have chosen this specific restaurant because I recently started to work there as a hostess. I work several days a week which gives me the opportunity to constantly observe different communication techniques within the workplace. Being new to this workplace, this evaluation will also be beneficial to me and will allow me to learn their types and level of communication.
The second community I have chosen to observe is Kappa Delta Sorority. I have chosen this because I am a sister of this sorority and am able to fully evaluate and grasp the different types of communication used within all ends of this group. Like my workplace, I believe learning about KD's communication will further benefit my membership as a sister. I am constantly in the sorority house, involving myself in different greek life events and around girls within my sorority which provides me with the best opportunity to learn about the communication styles.

The two communities that I am considering are a scientific diving organization for kids 12-18 called SCUBAnauts International and the other is my high school’s chorus.
1. SCUBAnauts International is a very unique community. Because of its focus on science and diving methods, SCUBAnauts has a very unique form of language and communication in order to be consistent with the scientific and diving communities that we interact with. SCUBAnaut’s primary means of communicating are through emails and monthly meetings in which upcoming plans, scientific training, and dive scheduling are all addressed. I have been a member of the organization for over seven years and am currently an adult leader for the organization. I have been a part of the communication and execution of events and training for all this time and I think it would be very interesting to pay close attention to the details behind it and really go in depth with such a successful, productive, and interesting community.
2. Chorus was a big part of my life when I was in High School. My teacher, Mr. Knabel, was an amazing instructor and I felt that the group as a whole had an amazing dynamic. We managed to accomplish great things in 4 years, such as singing at Disney’s candle light ceremony every year, getting invited to sing at Medieval Times, being hired to sing at organization and club lunches, and being invited to sing at Carnegie Hall twice. The group communicated primarily through emails to notify parents, parental meetings, and every day in class Mr. Knabel would keep us updated on the latest news for whatever trip or event was coming up.

ReplyDeleteFor my ethnography project I am considering studying either the accounting communities of Orlando or the interworking of the Disney Entertainment department. My reasons for choosing either of these are as follows.
I am contemplating using the accounting community, specifically the independent Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and their daily communications with their clients and fellow coworkers. I am majoring in the accounting, hence my interest in this communities ways of communicating and going about business, and possibly even how different types of communication can change the successfulness of a job. I know a few of the very basic techniques that accountants uses for communication between themselves, which is that it all very confidential and incognito, especially since they are talking about their client’s money. This all on its own is a very big reason that I will most likely not be able to crack my way in to this community just for the sake of a paper. What I could receive from a willing accountant would be a newsletter (not helpful) or maybe a few surface quality emails between coworkers. Due to the confidential nature of the business I would not be allowed to see anything of substance without having a certain level of clearance.
The second and more likely community that I will be focusing my ethnography on is the Entertainment Department of the Walt Disney World Resort. As I work within this department I know quite a bit about the community, but I think there is a lot I could still discover and learn by looking into the management sector of the department. I would have to narrow my ethnography down to the Entertainment department because there are so many employees, nearly 67,000, in the resort with just as many jobs and responsibilities. For example, within just the entertainment department I would be studying all character performances, shows and parades, managers of the specific events, and the dancers and entertainers of all kinds. As for observations I would look at the intercommunication between coworkers and then the difference between coworkers of the same show/parade and the conversations between those that are in a different show/parade, as I know they are vastly different.

The first community I have an interest in researching is related to both my current job and my major. I am a marketing major and I work in the marketing department for the Tampa Bay Rays. My job covers just a small sector of the marketing that goes on with the Rays and I would like to dig deeper and discover the types of communication that go on in the marketing department as a whole. I have many connections I can use to help my research. Since it is something I am interested in pursuing a career in, this would be a great opportunity to learn more.
The second community I am interested in is my sorority. Not only do we communicate with the members of the chapter, we communicate with other chapters, the Panhellenic Council, other fraternities and sororities, charities, restaurants and numerous other places and organizations. There are so many different methods and modes of communication used in the sorority and it would be something with lots to research and observe. Hopefully I will eventually hold a position in the sorority and I will need to know about all these means of communication so this project will help me achieve the knowledge I need for the position.

The first community that I am interested into exploring is my previous place of work. For a few summers I worked at a company called Complete Network Solutions Inc. This company installed infrastructure cabling, and in my many hours of working here, I began to become a part of the community. I would like to explore this community because I believe it would allow me to become more aware of my surroundings when I come back to work over the summer. I would go to meetings and examine the programs used to create the blueprints, and the types of cable used on the construction site.
The next community that I may explore is the UCF College of Business Administration. This is my major, and since I am a freshman, it would be both interesting and beneficial to become more informed about my future. I could come in contact with the Dean of the college, as well as other important figures that could assist me with this project.

The first community I would like to use for my ethnography project would be the UCF police department. The local station is on campus, right next to the Nike dorms. I want to be a forensic psychologist in the future; they works with profiling criminals in ongoing investigations with police forces or the FBI. So taking a look into the local police department would give me a great insight into my future career.
The second community would be the UCF gym. Almost everyone at UCF goes to the gym which is why it's so large and now we have a second gym on campus. There should be a lot of communication and methods of communication since we are such a large group here at UCF and so many students are going in and out of the gym constantly throughout the day. I would most likely use the newer, smaller one.

1) My first option for this project is the NOW (National Organization for Women) club on campus. I'm considering minoring in women's studies and this is an organization that focuses on feminism currently in the world today. They meet every Wednesday, and I've already been to a meeting to get a feel for what it would be like. By choosing to do my project on this community it could help me determine whether I want to pursue minoring in this field or not.
2) My second option is a community in the hospitality industry, which is what I am majoring in. My dad is a manager of a customer service branch at a hospital, and I feel this could really give me a feel for the kind of environment I will be in for my future career. Hospitality is all about good service, and by observing this community I would have the availabilty to get a behind the scenes look on what it takes to make every customer a happy customer.

For my ethnology project, I am considering looking into:
The soccer community- I have been playing soccer ever since I was young, and will continue to do so. I have been involved in the soccer community in Central Florida for quite some time. Tournaments, practices, games, soccer events, and the soccer community as a whole are all places that are quite familiar to me. I am interested in looking into this community because I feel that I have taken the soccer community for granted. Being too familiar with the community, I have not stopped and observed what all is really going on. I want to learn even more about the community, appreciating everything that surrounds me. I also think that I would accurately describe the community since I understand it well and am so familiar with it all.
My dad’s work- My dad works as an engineer for the Navy, a career I may consider pursuing myself. I am interested and curious about his work environment and community. Since I am considering this job as a future career, it would be a nice experience to personally go into the work environment and to observe the community. It may encourage my current interest in working as an engineer for the Navy. On the other hand, it may possibly cause me to stray away. Regardless, I believe that it would be a fun and interesting community to study.

My first community is the communication of second grade teachers and how they make lessons plan for each subject. One teacher, within the nine teachers, will be the head or leader of one subject. In example, there are five subjects that are taught in second grade classroom. One teacher is in charge of one subject and two others help them. They can have meeting or just send some ideas for lesson plans through email. The teacher can even take time from school to talk about what they can teach for the next lesson plans, or after school meetings.
My second opinion for a community would be the communication of the entire elementary school between the teachers, staff, school board, and students. Meeting are require for each grade and a whole staff school meting are held every week to discuss any school news are new teachings for the teacher. Open house is held to communicate with the parents of the student that are attending the school. There’s much more communication but I haven’t had the chance to find out more.

ReplyDeleteThe two communities I am interested in for my ethnography project are:
1) The first community I chose was the place were I work, Amici’s Italian restaurant and Pizzeria. Your work place is always a great community for it definitely has its own modes of communication and same purpose; To please its customers. Everyday learning more and more things about my job, I notice the communication that specifically the kitchen uses to speak to the waitresses. There is a specific language for fast communication by abbreviating foods too. Also, the restaurant business has a way of everyone having to know the tables’ numbers and importance to parties. I would just like to take the opportunity to further explore my work community. There are also specific rules and terms that are needed to know in order to fulfill this communities’ job. I will be able to note and learn the level of communication by not only being a worker, but a customer too.
2) The second community I will observe happens to be a club/organization that is also located at UCF, let alone all across the world. I will be observing the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). This community, having heard of them for years, can greatly benefit me. Not only will they do that, but members of AIAA definitely have a different form of communication. As an Aeronautical Engineer major, I would gain much knowledge of the everyday life of an engineer. Current Engineer workers will be show cased at competitions, conferences, and even at our own meetings. For only twenty five dollars per year I will be invited into scholarships, informational job meetings, and see the everyday life of engineers though competitions. Being able to pick up mathematical and other physics related vocabulary can greatly push me forward in helping me in my future job. They also help the other communities in charitable events and volunteering opportunities.

For the ethnography project, there are two groups I am interested in researching. The first one would be working for a restaurant at Disney. It is a career I am interested in and since I am a business major, I think it ties in with that as well. I would like to explore a week in the life of a guest service manager at a popular restaurant on property whether it is at one of the parks or in a resort. I have lots of contacts there since I work at Magic Kingdom, so it would be a good opportunity to branch out and explore what my leaders do on a daily basis.
The second group I am considering is Precious and Few Daycare. I love kids and know that it’s pretty tough working with them for hours on end and then having to deal with the parents at times too. I know it would be very interesting to see the communication levels change drastically from child to adult as the day progresses for someone in this field. This also would benefit me as a business major, since this would show how a specific small business runs and works.

1.The first community that I'm interested in looking into is Systems and Users Lab here at UCF. This research lab studies and improves the overall experience between humans and machines. I heard about this research lab from a professor and saw pictures of how workers were playing video games for research. Having an interest in video games, this is a great opportunity for me to be in this specific research lab and learn more about how machines work and how it can be better.
2. The second community I'm interested in looking into is the UCF programming team. Each year the UCF programming team is made up of a group of UCF students or soon-to-be UCF students that excel in programming codes and qualify in the local contest at UCF. This team then goes to compete against other schools in other states in the Southeast USA region. The UCF team has also made it to the World Finals a few times in the past. Because my major is Computer Science and I have an interest in programming, I would enjoy looking into this team and study and practice more in programming, hopefully even making the team in the future and having a chance to compete in the World Finals.

ReplyDeleteA local art club that meets at a teahouse called Dandelions. We meet once a month for about an hour to present our new pieces and talk about mediums we’ve used. There is definitely a sense of community between the group while we discuss our work. We talk about different techniques used and tricks we’ve learned or discovered.
The other community I am thinking about studying is my swimming community. I have been a competitive swimmer for twelve years. A lingo between swimmers definitely exists. There are different words and phrases that are popular throughout the entire swimming community and then there are also things only familiar with a certain team. I am very familiar with the ins and outs of communication between the swimming community.

The first community that I plan on looking at is Status Automotive. This is an automotive customization shop where I do most of the work on my truck ranging from suspension lifts to sound systems. All types of work goes on in this shop, even basic repairs and maintenance. I am choosing this as one of my places for the ethnography project because I have always loved anything dealing with vehicles. When I first got my truck I planned out performance parts, custom suspension, sound system, and much more. Picking a place that I have first hand experience and take interest in will help me interact better with this project.
The second place to shadow for this project will be my parents jewelry store. Even though my parents own the place there still is a lot I don't know and observe about the place. I have done miscellaneous work there, but never shadowed the jewelers or taken the time to really notice all the different aspects. The little work that I have done here will allow me to recognize the various sounds and tools better than people without prior experience. By observing this place I believe it will give me a better understanding of what actually goes on and form a better connection to my parents store.

The two communities I chose to look into for the ethnology project are:
The swim team community- The Kissimmee Swim Association that is at the Makison Aquatic Center in Kissimmee by Valencia Community College. I was involved with this swim team for about four years; I was an assistant coach as well as an athlete for the head coach. Even though I have been submerged in to this community I feel that I could learn more. I have the aspect of an athlete but not exactly as a spectator or as an observer. I feel like I could learn even more. Plus it’s a safe community that is avoiding dangerous bike gangs.
My work community: Publix- The 1408 Publix Supermarket is one of two places am I employed. This is also a safe community I could really sink my teeth into because I’m able to be there for a long period of time and observe just what is going on. How employs interact with each other, how employees interact with management and how they interact with customers. I will have worked at Publix for a year this coming March. I feel this would also be a good area as well to focus my research on

After much consideration, I have narrowed my communities down to two; My mother's work office (a Mohs surgeon) and a dental office.
1. The aspect of surgery has always interested me. Therefore this community is the one that intrigues me. I love the idea that you can perform surgery without the hassle of being on-call. I would truly love to spend a decent amount of time in this community. I have gone to work with my mother only a few times so I could only imagine delving deep into that community. I am a pre-med major and I was always leaning towards going to medical school to become a surgeon. This is a great place to start for me to decide which direction in the medical field I would like to go. This community uses it own specific language and set of rules associated with it. Confidentiality for patients and records is the number one rule.
2. Though it is not my first choice, I am also interested in the dental community. It is one of those communities that always need new employees. It is also less invasive than the other community I was looking at. I always wanted to be a dentist from the time I was a kid. They use their own specific tools, language and rules. I am not that educated in this community but I am excited to learn.
The first community I would like to observe is the UCF Quotes club. It is the public relations club of UCF. Since advertising/public relations is my major, I believe that it would greatly benefit me from observing them. I would get a chance to learn about some of the internships they offer, how I can become an effective member of the group, and how being a part of this club will benefit my future. I do not know that much about what I want to do with a degree in advertising/pubic relations, but by joining this community it can show me all of the opportunities I am given.

I would like to observe this community because I'd like to minor in marketing, or if I don't get into the Ad/PR program at UCF then I'd most likely switch my major to marketing. I want to learn more about sports marketing management; companies I can get internships with, where to start, how to be effective with marketing, etc. I believe that observing this community will also give me a better look at what I want do to with my future.

1. My first community would be the Association of Pre-Physician Assistants at UCF. I have a medical major and it would be good for me to find out all careers available for me in the medical field. It would also be a good way for me to see how a UCF organization functions within a school and how they help each other.
2. My second community would be a UCF club sports team. Any team would have their own lexus and I would be able to watch practices much easier than a UCF major team. I would also like to see what it takes to be a part of a UCF club team to see if I have what it takes to play for one.

I chose to investigate a computer class in Mid Florida Technical School called Computer Systems Technology and an academic program called Monticello.
I chose the Computer class because it relates to my major and teaches the basics of what my major wants us to be familiar with. I know a few people that attend the class and I have become good friends with the instructor there as he has helped me in the past with my computer problems. I hope to gain some experiences from this investigation and learn more about their communication systems, how they gain their knowledge of computers and how they best apply it in their lives. Also I can learn more about how the teacher will has improved his class since I last visited him.
The second possible organization that I might look into is the Monticello Scholar Academy program at my sister’s high school. I choose this because I was once interested in this program but decided to join something else near beginning of my high school days. I changed my mind at the last minute because the one I choose felt easier to handle than Monticello. But now my sister has entered the program and it put her into very rigorous courses in high school. The program I entered was called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and it had elective classes to help me out plus gave me elective credits and helped me prepare for college. But Monticello did not have elective classes and I want to find out why it still is very prestigious and how their community behaves so as to learn if the students who become part of the program and graduate are better off in their post graduate lives.

ACTS Indian River Estates of Vero Beach, Florida and the Oviedo Police Department.
The first community is the retirement home that I worked at when I was in high school. I thought it would be interesting to investigate because of the different departments within the community and how they communicate effectively.
The second community I thought would be interesting to learn what codes mean what when they communicate on the police scanner. I also thought it would be interesting to learn how they stay communicated with the 911 operators who get the calls from the people in need of help.

Also my teacher is a really big role model to me because she has accomplished a lot that I hope I will one day be able to accomplish.
2. The second community I would like to look into is an elementary school. I would like to observe the community of a pre-school class. This is another profession that I am thinking of going into. I really like to see how teachers differ in their ways of teaching and how they think of new and creative ways to teach the kids.
I am interested in looking into Chabad (Jewish organization) and the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). Chabad is intriguing to me because I was brought up with Jewish teachings, so it allows me to explore what I have been taught. Although AMSA is much different, it’s goal touches upon my goal to become a neurosurgeon.
ReplyDeleteRabbi Lipskier runs the Chabad, devoting his time and energy to uplift the lives of Jewish students in the Orlando area. He teaches a class about relationships every Monday and teaches about the weekly Torah (Jewish bible) portion on Tuesdays. Although teaching may be enough, he takes it a step further by bringing cookies on Mondays and pasta on Tuesdays for the students to enjoy. Furthermore, every Tuesday night he puts together a kosher BBQ where Jewish guys and girls tend to mingle. As if all that is not enough, he invites all Jews around the area to join him in prayer and a meal every Friday night and Saturday day. The idea behind Chabad is a truly wonderful one.
UCF students who are on the AMSA board are motivated to learn about the medical field in order to pass on the information to other interested students. The board members go out of their way to find places to volunteer, ways to socialize, doctors to shadow etc. They even look for workers in the medical field who are willing to take the time to speak to AMSA members, allowing the students to ask questions that most people do not have the answers to. Joining AMSA brings about great opportunities involving medicine, which means it is a great opportunity for me due to the fact that I am trying to get into medical school.

The two communities I’m interested in investigating for my ethnography project are the medical community, specifically how doctors communicate with each other, their staff, and the medical community as a whole. I’m also interested in investigating the UCF on campus housing community. My father is a facial plastic surgeon and I too have a passion and I desire to one day be a surgeon. This is what has sparked me to be interested in investigating the medical community. As far as I know physicians generally communicate with their staff either via email or staff meetings. Physicians communicate with other physicians via professionally drafted emails or by phone. As far as the UCF on campus housing community I know they communicate to students by posting information sheets on doors, but as far as how they communicate with each other and the janitorial staff is unknown. I’m interested in discovering how this community communicates simply because I’m apart of this community and will be for the next four years.

1. One community I am interested in researching is the renewable energy group in the Siemens engineering company. I am interested in this group because I plan on majoring in mechanical engineering and want to work with renewable energy sources. From what I can guess, I’m sure the company communicates a lot by email, newsletters, and meetings, but I would like to look more in depth of how employees communicate with each other to give me a better understanding of the company and the employees that work with renewable energy sources.
2. Another community I am interested in researching is my church. From only going to church on Sundays, I cannot fully understand how a church works. I know there are many employees and volunteers that work there, but I only get to see the priests and ushers. I would like to go more in depth of how the church runs and how employees and volunteers communicate with each other and with the members of the church. I know there are many different groups within the church and they all also communicate with each other.

The first community I'm interested in is the MMA gym Gracie Barra. Gracie Barra is one of the biggest, and best gyms for MMA in the United States. There are Gracie Barra's all over America, and they have produced some of the best fighters in the world. I'm interested to find out how the discourse is within the business and marketing aspects of the community. I know a lot of the discourse on the fighting side, but there's always more to learn. I also fight for Gracie Barra, so that will make this a lot easier.
The second community I'm interested in learning more about is the yoga community. I love yoga, and practice it everyday so it should be interesting to go in depth to see what yoga discourse is like. I think I have some sort of grasp on it, but I have a lot more to learn. I'm taking a yoga class at UCF which has an excellent teacher, and hopefully she can help me alot with this if I choose this subject.

The communities I chose are as followed,
1)My previous job as a swim instructor would be my first choice. This is my preference because I think that it would be a fascinating community to explore, mainly because of main goal of the community as a whole. Which is to insure safety at all times and then to teach swimming, of course. Through a lot of hard work, dedication, attentiveness and creativity this swim school operates as a community.
2)The nursing station at The Cardiac and Vascular Institute at the hospital would have to be my second choice. Not only am I currently a nursing major, but I was also a volunteer there for one year and a half. I think that this would be an interesting community to explore because so many people are unaware of all the work nurses do that is just overseen. There are many terms and procedures used by the nurses in this unit and I would love to explore it.

Since I work there I would be able to report the life of cooks in a full service theme park restaurant. Also, I would be able to get more familiar with what the overall attitude of all my co-workers.
My second choice would be my fraternity which would be a good choice because there are many facets of life with their being many members,so many different things go on day by day. With being around so much I can get deep incite on what can go on in just the average day and it would allow me to get to know everyone better.

For the first discourse community I would consider Anathema Industries INC or its parent company. This is a small business opened by a former UCF graduate and good friend of mine. Theirs is a small business model that has proven quite successful thus far. Its premiere tenant of business practice centers around close and solid communication of the employees. Many of the employees have been there since the inception of this company and new employees are often picked, as suggestions are, from existing employees recommendations. Everyone wants to be their own boss, for me I think the biggest obstacle is finding a working model that has room to grow. From their example of a business that started part time for a few people in an apartment to a growing operation that can’t be contained in one warehouse, one can learn a great deal about how successful business is created through good communication.
The next discourse community I would like to consider has less real world application and comes from my passion for entertainment and programming. They say that ultimately we should do what we love, though this is not always prudent in business practice, recreation need not know the same boundaries. What has become known as the Forge Mod Community, is a group of game modders that have come together to reshape a world they frequent. They have come together to add a new scope and literally new dimensions to an internet sensation Minecraft. This game published as an indie title originally by a single programmer known as Notch, that has literally skyrocketed in the industry redefining boundaries. From release and onward this game and its company have been supportive of modders, but without creating a structured environment to bound the limits of them. This is a double edged sword, as mods that come out on their own often conflict and can cause instability. The group I would discuss has traversed this gap, creating a framework, through which mods can be developed to work together in tandem. This is done by people devoting their spare time to development and maintenance of code and a great deal of collaboration. These people are bound together in cause but they are not bound by employment. It is a celebration of both gaming and programming that comes together so that many can enjoy it. Without organization and drive these sorts of communities will fall apart shortly after inception. There is also a great deal one can learn about programming theory through following people who are obviously skilled in the craft, not to mention the practice one might get through participating in testing, debugging or modding itself.

ReplyDeleteTwo communities that I am interested in looking into for my ethnography project are the EXCEL program at UCF and the Brevard housing community at UCF.
The EXCEL program is about helping STEM majors have increased success in STEM courses through many methods such as a tutoring center, smaller classes, etc. EXCEL also provides its members with the opportunity to conduct research in an area of STEM that they are interested in. I am interested in looking at this community because I think that it is a good program that helps its members through the good ways of communication amongst the community.
The Brevard housing community would be interesting to look at because I am a part of it and I believe that it is a good community that brings its members together. There are many methods of communication used to provide information and advertise events to the community. Its members are kept well informed about any housing issues through verbal and written methods of communication.

The first community I am interested in for the ethnography Project is the hotel industry. My major is Hospitality Management; I’ve been taking classes related to lodging operations in which I learned how different hotels work in the country as well as internationally. I find this a very fascinating field in which I would like to focus and eventually build a career path to move my way up in the industry. Right now, I’m currently applying for an entry level position at local hotels and I discovered the importance of good communication between management and employees. Great customer service depends on well trained, informed staff, being able to communicate any problems and finding fast solutions.
The second community would be Performing Arts. I am very interested in the artistic world, which includes acting, singing, and dancing. I participated in my high school choir and my local church choir for a few years and really learned so much about music and training your voice. I would love to join the university choir since I enjoy singing and further investigate their forms of communication, from teaching methods to specific meetings, rehearsals and performances.

The first community I have chosen is my mom’s coffee shop. It’s called Banyan Coffee & tea, located in my hometown, St. Petersburg. I work there during summer and sometimes on weekends when I go home. This would be a great community to explore because there is such an eclectic group of individuals who come in. When I was working during spring break, one of the regulars came in, who is a Pulitzer Prize winner, to tell my mom that he and his wife had just received Emmys for a series of articles written in the paper. Moreover there are so many types of communication happening from the employees and the customers.
The second community I have chosen is the school of Nursing. This is my major and exploring how people communicate would be extremely beneficial to my future. I could also research a hospital and how in action nurses perform on a daily basis.

The two communities that I am interested to investigate for the ethnography project are:
1) The first community I would like to explore would be the UCF Police Department. As a kid, I have always wanted to be a policeman. Being that my dad was a part of the police force in my home country, I am somewhat familiar with the way the community executes and accomplishes their daily duties. I think this particular community would be an interesting one to explore because the police community has a fascinating way of communicating through use of specific lexis and technology.
2) The second would be a Rowing Club. This sport involves detailed language and actions that only this community would understand. Just like any other sport, they have rowing practices, gym practices, water exercises, and competitions in which they compete. I am very knowledgeable of the club being that I am friends with one of the crew members who could share important information with me about the community.

My first choice of a community that I am looking into for my ethnography project are smartphone users. More specifically iPhones. I have just recently landed a job with a company called iCracked where I fix iPhones, iPods, and iPads. There is a lot of different syntax and a difference in genre of communication in this community. It will be fascinating to see what kinds of communication is used as well as a different persons point of view upon the community. The understanding of an iPhone has become somewhat universal, but there are lots of different things, especially internally, that the community and it’s users do not understand.
My second choice of a community is my fathers job. He is a pilot for Delta airlines, and although I have talked to him about it I have never interviewed him about the community as a whole. I would like to examine how the airline works and the types of communication used within it. I know partially how the communication between the pilots and the air traffic controller is because I have had many conversations with my dad about it as well as personal flying experience. There are many rules and regulations that must be adhered too within this community.
The first community I would like to explore would be the hospitality community. This is my major so that is why I would like to explore it. There are lots of options for me to choose to explore such at hotels or restaurants. There would be specialized language in these communities that I would have to experience to understand. Also I would learn how different departments communicate to be successful.

I would explore how the community works together to keep everyone on campus safe and how to deal with certain situations. With MegaConvention coming up, I decided to take a dive into the geek/nerd community; specifically, I am observing the anime fans. This will not be my first encounter with this culture, because I also take part in this culture like many Americans. This culture enjoys their pleasures of Japanese animation and some tend to go further than that and indulge themselves with the Japanese culture, as far as learning the language or even trying sushi for the first time. Japanese lexicon and formal suffixes tend to be used in our English language as well, examples like (kawaii, sugoi, ohayou, -chan, -kun-, -san), however the use of broken Japanese is widely discouraged and in fact, some meet it with hostility depending on the fan. Another popular practice would be the activity of cosplaying. Cosplaying (コスプレ ROMAJI: kosupure) is extremely popular within this culture, where fans would gather around, dress as their favorite character, and assume role-play along with some friendly showing off. This culture also has an extremely large presence on there internet which unites many fans world-wide and also helps establish portals of communication. An example would be MegaCovention, it currently hosts a Facebook page and there is a center for information on future panels, people going, and etc.
One more community I might base my ethnography involves the automobile community. Specifically performance and drifting. I was recently introduced to it in my early senior year by a childhood friend and observing it, it merits the observation. Within this community, communication is executed through the usual forms verbal dialogue, writing, and internet; however you will find that there will be inclusion of mechanical terms that an average man would not pick up at first listening. Communication is extremely important because much of these topics involve finances (purchasing, selling related items like parts, etc), advice on future projects, but most importantly, maintaining this group alive and well in the city scene. The use of of forums and Facebook is a common portal of communication when it comes to relaying info.

The first community I would write my ethnography paper about is being in the crew at moes. I had worked at Moe's Southwest Grill for over a year and know everything there is to know about the place. I've been there long enough to see who gets fired and the deciated workers. I can easily go in on a normal Moe's day and see how they choose to operate.
My second community would be a basketball team. I played high school basketball back in my freshmanyear of high school and was starting some of the games too. We had a set amount of plays along with meetings before games and other types of genres. Being pushed by our coaches, we strived for what was best for us and i feel like my high school basketball team is a great community for this ethonography paper.
The first community I am interested in looking in to for my ethnography project is the UCF football team. The reason I am interesting in looking into this community is because I am a part of it. We communicate using a specific language and signs to let each other know what we are trying to say. This allows us to communicate more effectively. For example, coaches may yell out blue 42 which means a play but nobody else knows what it means except the people on the team. This allows you to have an advantage on your opponent. By having a secret language it makes you feel like you are a part of a secret group.

I want to know if they have a lot of things in common that other people who don’t attend college don’t have. By be a college student I know that it takes a lot of hard work and time to be successful in college and I have something in common with this discourse.

The two communities I would like to talk about are:
1) A comedy group that performs stand up comedy at Drunken Monkey coffee lounge. I visit the place regularly almost every Friday and I really admire these people, going as far as to approaching them and talking to them, eventually even make some new friends within that group. It would be very interesting getting to know these people deeper and better with this project.
2) The UCF Guitar Club. I'm a musician myself so it would be fun and interesting getting to know these group of people better. I was going to be part of it but due to other commitments I wasn't available for the meetings. Maybe with this project I will have that chance that I didn't have.

I believe that this would be an interesting community to observe because there is something new happening everyday and I could learn a lot about how people communicate and socialize in and out of a game, since the pressure level is very different. I can observe both my team and our opponents, giving me more of an understanding of the game and the players.
2. I would also be interested in observing our athletic trainers. I want to become a physical therapist when I graduate, so this community would definitely give me a chance to understand what I will be getting in to and what type of people I would be working with in the future.
